Many local craftsmen are
to be found in the small towns and villages scattered around the region
where they have managed to keep alive their ancestral techniques since
time immemorial.
Of particular interest,
especially due to the great age of the techniques involved and to the new
revival brought about by later generations of young craftsmen, are the
Taramundi iron workshops. It is here that all kinds of kitchen utensils
and farm equipment are made, as well as the famous knives with boxwood
handles. Celtic pottery is kept alive in the form of the so-called 'cerámica
negra' or black pottery and can be found at Faro (Oviedo) and Llamas de
Mouro (Cangas del Narcea).
Within the whole area of
Asturias one can still find a great abundance of clog and basketmakers,
ancient textile mills (Los Oscos) and jet trinket makers (in Eastern and
Central Asturias). |
