Balearic Islands
Ibiza is not merely
synonymous with nightlife and entertainment. This is only one side of reality.
There is very much more. The Island, covering 570 square kilometres, is
the third in size in the Balearic Islands and, among other things
offers a wide range of cultural events and the lovely scenery that makes
it one of the most attractive islands in the Mediterranean.
Its 18 kilometres of exceptional
beaches provide for all tastes - beaches for children, for water sports,
deserted, shingle, deep water, etc. The coastal scenery (the view from
des Vedrà in Sant Josep at sunset is beyond price) with such unspoilt
beaches as Cala Salada, in Sant Antoni, Cala Llenya, in Santa Eulària,
s'Illot des Renclí and Bol Nou, in Sant Josep, or Cala d'en Serra,
in Sant Joan, just to mention a few. And the biodiversity of the Ses Salines
Nature Reserve, where the richness of the flora and fauna in the area is
a real delight for those exploring the ecological aspects of the Island.
The night life and the beach
are the two hypnotic attractions that have attributed to Ibiza an almost
mythical status for summer vacations, leaving other values, such as cultural
ones, in an undeserved second place. A tourist reality that is easily understandable,
leaving apart the night life, as the beautiful coves and beaches are universally
appreciated when visited in situ. The crystal clear water, the welcoming
spaces where the white sand or the cobbles invite us to swim, the intimate
landscape where we take communion with nature... are enough reasons to
compare the coast of this island with a description of paradise in the
Balearics.
However, it is not just little
coves along the coasts of Ibiza. Along the coast we can visit, as
do thousands of tourists each season, long beaches of fine grain sand and
extensive dune networks that characterise the landscape of some areas such
as the beach at platja d'en Bossa, very near to the capital, Ibiza City.
Between Ibiza and Formentera
there are a multitude of tiny islets, communities for plant and animal
life endemic to the area. It is an isolated, but perfectly preserved ecosystem.
In the areas around the coasts
of Ibiza, highlights include the Natural Reservation of ses Salines that
also includes the coastal lagoons of l'estany del Peix, l'estany Pudent
and the Bassa de s'Empalmador, all in Formentera.
In Ibiza are the sandy
beaches
at Illetes, Trinxa, Cavallet and esCodolar. To the
Southwest of the island of Ibiza is the island of es Vedrà that,
with a height 381 meters, is the most spectacular elevation in the Pitiüses.
It is located exactly opposite Cala d'Hort, a small pebble beach from where
a wonderful view can be enjoyed, especially when the sun sets in the evening
behind es Vedrà. |
