This
shipyard, which began life at the time of the greatest commercial and military
expansion of Catalonia and Aragón throughout the Mediterranean,
in 14C, is, according to the specialists Hernández Cros, G. Mora
and X. Pouplana, following on from Cirici Pellicer, "the most complete
example of a medieval shipyard which is still preserved in our time". This
is despite the fact that its construction lasted until 18C, because it
never lost the original building style, which was the most adequate for
its purpose. The whole comprises three 17C plants, in the direction of
the Rambla, and another eight longer ones behind. Through the door of the
first of these, located in a tower, one enters the premises. The plants,
with pointed arches, and covered by a sloping roof, are very simple but
very beautiful. This was where the boats that ploughed the Mediterranean
were built, and some of them from mid 18C onwards were used for trading
with South America.

In
what had been the arsenal of the fortress the Royal Palace was established
at the end of 19Cm after the renovation carried out by Pere Falqués,
and in 1900 the headquarters of the Fine Arts Museum was installed there.
In 1932 the main part of the building was the seat of the Catalonian Parliament,
which functioned during the years of the Second Republic. In 1939 it was
used as barracks, and was taken over once more in 1945 as a Museum of Modern
Art and with the implementation of the present democracy the Parliament
of the Autonomous Community returned to its original home. |
